Cisco Announces SPP Digital Watermark Detection Platform: Cuts Off Illegal TV Streaming

The new system uses digital watermarking to distinguish illegal streaming media on the Internet from paid and subscription-based video services in real time

Illegal streaming media was very common in the 2000s, because pirates found ways to steal video and pour it onto the network

At first, pirated streaming media was mainly aimed at sports events that were charged per hour, but as broadcasters began to provide online subscription TV programs, the content of pirated streaming media videos became more diversified

Today, you can easily find many streaming media portals on the Internet, which provide access to thousands of television channels and sports events around the world, including free or a small amount of content that needs to be paid

It should be pointed out that even if the quality of streaming media is standard definition (SD) or high definition (HD), thousands to millions of views will still consume the huge bandwidth of broadcasters in an instant

Cisco said that its SPP platform allows broadcasters to hide embedded watermarks in video sources, which can be detected later. Since Cisco devices control a large number of backbone networks of the Internet, the company can discard video streaming media packets passing through its devices when they are detected

In fact, the SPP platform has been put into practical application. Cisco announced that it had reached a cooperation with Friend MTS, a European company whose business is to track the current illegal video streaming sources

Friend MTS said that there are currently more than 12000 separate HD channels (1280 720 and above) and more than 10000 standard definition (SD) pirated services, with bandwidth quality ranging from 150Kbps to 15Mbps (HEVC)
