On April 13, Alibaba announced that it would join the International Anti-Counterfeit Alliance (IACC). However, the IACC Board of Directors recently received an anonymous email requesting IACC to cancel Alibaba's membership, or a large number of IACC members would withdraw from the alliance.
Michael Korsy, a fashion brand, and Gucci America, a luxury brand, have announced their withdrawal from IACC.
In a letter to IACC, Michael Coles said that while many brand manufacturers are considering forcing Alibaba to increase its efforts to crack down on counterfeits through litigation, accepting them as members will "cover up our most dangerous and destructive opponents".
Lee Sporn, the general counsel of Michael Coles, pointed out: "Alibaba's consistent strategy is to support the fight against counterfeits in words, but not in practice."
Gucci said that the luxury brand Gucci did not want to sit at the same table with Alibaba in the fight against counterfeit products.
Alibaba stressed that in Alibaba Group, more than 2000 employees have taken full time responsibility for combating counterfeits, and another 5000 social volunteers have participated in combating counterfeits, with a capital investment of more than 1 billion yuan.
Just yesterday, the latest survey by the Associated Press showed that the IACC president held shares in Alibaba, was closely related to a key vice president of Alibaba, and allowed family members to operate IACC.
1. Since Alibaba was listed in New York in 2014, IACC President Baches has held Alibaba shares. IACC said in a statement that this shareholding only accounted for "a small part of his portfolio".
